Mahindra has filed design patents in India for the Vision X, the compact SUV first shown as a concept and expected to be the smallest model on the new NU_IQ platform. The filing signals production is close, with the sub-4m SUV set to sit above the XUV 3XO in both ICE and EV forms.

What was announced

Mahindra has secured Indian design patents for the Vision X, the compact SUV previewed as a concept earlier this year. The patent images are close to the show car, which suggests the production model will retain the sharply styled nose, pronounced wheel arches, coupe-inspired roofline and slim outside rear-view mirrors seen on the concept. The filing is the clearest indication yet that the Vision X is progressing to a showroom launch rather than remaining a design study.

A sub-4m SUV positioned above the XUV 3XO, in both ICE and EV, is the exact gap Mahindra has left open in its own lineup.

The Vision X will be the smallest model on Mahindra's new NU_IQ platform, sitting above the XUV 3XO in the lineup. It is expected to measure under four metres, keeping it inside India's sub-4m tax bracket and squarely in the compact SUV segment that includes the Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue, Maruti Brezza and Kia Sonet. Despite the compact footprint, Mahindra is aiming higher up the price ladder than the XUV 3XO, positioning the Vision X as a more premium sub-4m offering.

The NU_IQ architecture has been engineered to accommodate both internal combustion engines and electric drivetrains, and the Vision X is expected in both ICE and EV forms. Industry reports suggest the electric version could reach showrooms before the petrol model, though Mahindra has not officially confirmed the rollout sequence, pricing or launch timeline.

The Car Jury verdict

The patent filing matters because it tells us the concept's styling, slim mirrors, coupe roof, pronounced arches and all, is largely surviving the trip to production. That is unusual for a sub-4m SUV, a segment where cost engineering usually strips the concept down to something anonymous. Mahindra has earned the benefit of the doubt here after the BE6 and XEV 9E arrived looking close to their show cars.

The risk is history. As Team-BHP notes, Mahindra's earlier sub-4m attempts, the Quanto and Novo Sport, never became mainstream. Motor Inc also flags that Mahindra has so far been "focused on big footprint electrics." A premium compact positioned above the XUV 3XO, in ICE and EV, is a genuine gap in Mahindra's lineup. If the EV version launches first at a sensible price, this becomes the most interesting small SUV of 2027.
