Citroen Basalt X Comfort Edition at Rs 8.75 lakh: Trim Tweaks, Not a Fix
Citroen India has launched the Basalt X Comfort Edition at Rs 8.75 lakh ex-showroom, adding a bundle of interior comfort features to the coupe-SUV's lower variants. The Basalt is the second Citroen model after the Aircross X to get the Comfort Edition treatment, which packages equipment via Curated Comfort AXS packs.
What was announced
Citroen India has introduced the Basalt X Comfort Edition at an ex-showroom starting price of Rs 8.75 lakh. The special edition, positioned on the lower-end variants of the Basalt coupe-SUV, adds what Citroen describes as a range of comfort-oriented features for the interior, bundled through the brand's Curated Comfort AXS packs.
Six years in, Citroen is finally patching the base trims of the Basalt with kit that should have been standard from launch.
The Basalt is the second nameplate in Citroen's India range to receive this treatment. The Aircross X, its mid-size SUV sibling that shares the CMP platform and much of the powertrain and feature set, was first to get the Comfort Edition treatment earlier this year. Mechanically the Basalt continues unchanged: the coupe-SUV is offered with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol paired to a manual or automatic gearbox, and a naturally aspirated 1.2 petrol on lower trims. There is no new powertrain, no visual refresh, and no change to the top-spec Max variants as part of this launch.
The Comfort Edition is aimed squarely at value-conscious buyers who found the base and mid variants under-equipped versus rivals such as the Tata Curvv, Hyundai Creta and Kia Syros. By moving select convenience features down the range through an AXS pack, Citroen is trying to lift the perceived equipment level of its entry variants without touching the top of the lineup. Bookings and deliveries are open at Citroen dealerships across India, with the Comfort Edition badging and pack contents being the primary differentiator over the standard lower trims.
The Car Jury verdict
This is a merchandising move, not a product update. Citroen is repackaging existing kit into an AXS pack for the lower Basalt variants because the base trims were bare, and it is doing so six years into the platform's life. Faisal Khan of FasBeam put it bluntly on the Aircross X: "this is not something they had thought about when designing this car back when it was launched in 2020." Motor Inc has also flagged that the Aircross X and Basalt X are near-identical on paper, so expect similar economics here.
At Rs 8.75 lakh the Basalt remains competitively priced against a Tata Curvv or Kia Syros, but Citroen's service network and resale still trail. Our stance on the Basalt stays WAIT. Buyers cross-shopping should also look at the Skoda Kushaq.
