What was announced

Total electric passenger car retails stood at 32,928 units in July 2026, per VAHAN data, versus 17,981 in July 2025. That is 83.13% YoY growth and the highest-ever July tally. Sales dipped 1.78% month-on-month from June 2026's record 33,524 units, but this is the second consecutive month clearing 30,000 retails, a threshold the segment first crossed only weeks ago.

Two Indian brands, Tata and Mahindra, now account for roughly two-thirds of every electric car sold in India, and the gap over imports is widening each month.

Tata Motors held the top slot with 13,678 units, up 103.18% from 6,732 in July 2025 and up 6.85% from 12,801 in June 2026. That is a 41.5% share of the electric car market. Mahindra took second place with 7,742 units, a 126.64% YoY jump from the low base of 3,416 units in the same month last year, driven by the BE6 and XEV 9e.

The Car Jury verdict

Two brands are running this market, and both are Indian. Tata's 13,678 retails leaned on the Harrier EV, Curvv EV and Nexon EV, all cars The Car Jury rates a BUY and BUY respectively. Team-BHP's line that the newest launch is "not just another Tata EV" captures why the lineup keeps compounding: each new car adds volume rather than cannibalising the last.

Mahindra's 126% jump is the sharper story. The BE6 and XEV 9e have taken the fight straight to Tata's premium EVs, and the upcoming XEV 9S will widen the net. Gagan Choudhary's SWOT framing of the Tata Sierra is timely: the ICE Sierra lands into a market where Indian buyers now default to Tata and Mahindra for electric, and imports must justify a premium the numbers say they cannot.
