Mercedes-AMG has pulled the V8 out of its flagship four-door coupe and replaced it with an 800V electric powertrain that hits 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds. The 2026 GT 4-Door Coupe debuts as a 1,169 bhp, 2,000 Nm hypersedan with a 106 kWh battery, 700 km range claim, and sub-12 minute fast charging. India launch and pricing are not yet confirmed.

The Car Jury verdict

This is the AMG four-door reinvented around the battery, not retrofitted. A 0.22 Cd drag figure, 800V architecture, and 600 kW peak DC charging put it squarely in Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and upcoming BMW i7 M territory, rather than the old twin-turbo V8 conversation. The 2,460 kg kerb weight is the obvious caveat, but the 2.1-second sprint suggests AMG has tuned the torque vectoring and launch control to disguise it on a straight line.

For India, the relevance is narrow but real. Mercedes-Benz India has been pushing electric flagships hard with the EQS and EQS SUV, and a CBU AMG GT 4-Door EV would slot above both as the brand's performance halo. Expect a sticker north of Rs 2.5 crore ex-showroom whenever it lands, which makes it a statement car for existing S-Class and AMG owners rather than a volume play.

What was announced

The 2026 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe has debuted as a fully electric replacement for the V8-powered outgoing car. It measures 5,094 mm long and 1,411 mm tall, sitting roughly 4 cm lower than its predecessor, and posts a drag coefficient of 0.22 Cd. Kerb weight is 2,460 kg, a figure driven largely by the 106 kWh battery pack mounted under the floor.

The pack uses an 800V architecture and supports DC fast charging at up to 600 kW. Mercedes claims a 10 to 80 percent top-up in 11 minutes, adding 460 km of range in a 10-minute stop. Total WLTP-cycle range is quoted at up to 700 km on a single charge, which puts it ahead of the current Porsche Taycan and on par with the larger EQS sedan.

Two variants have been confirmed at debut. The GT 55 makes 816 bhp and is rated to do 0 to 100 km/h in under 3 seconds. The flagship GT 63 produces 1,169 bhp and 2,000 Nm of torque, with a claimed 0 to 100 km/h time of 2.1 seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in 6.4 seconds. That makes the GT 63 the most powerful AMG-badged production car to date, eclipsing the outgoing V8 GT 63 S E Performance hybrid. Mercedes has not yet confirmed an India launch date or pricing for either variant.
