Mahindra Owns the 4.5-4.8m SUV Segment: May 2026 Sales Decoded

The 4.5m to 4.8m SUV segment posted 39,698 units in May 2026, a 29.27% jump over May 2025. Mahindra alone accounted for more than three-fourths of the category, with the Scorpio twins and XUV7XO leading and the XEV 9S and 9e adding meaningful electric volume.

Total sales in the 4.5m to 4.8m SUV segment reached 39,698 units in May 2026, up 29.27% from 30,709 units in May 2025. Mahindra accounted for more than three-fourths of that volume, with Toyota, Tata and MG splitting the remainder. Growth was driven by the XUV7XO refresh and Mahindra's two electric entries in the segment.
Mahindra now owns three out of every four SUVs sold between 4.5 and 4.8 metres, and the gap to Toyota and Tata is widening, not closing.

The Car Jury verdict
Mahindra has effectively turned this segment into a single-brand contest, and the numbers explain why Toyota, Tata and MG are running second-tier campaigns here. The Scorpio N still does the heavy lifting (a BUY in our book), but the real story is the XUV7XO's 45% jump and the XEV 9S adding 3,502 units from a cold start. Faisal Khan of FasBeam flagged that the 7XO finally adds Level 2 ADAS, even if it is camera-based, and that upgrade is clearly converting. Biturbo Media's worry that "the electronic dependency has increased even more" with the 7XO is fair, and it is the one reason we still rate the related XEV 9E a WAIT. For buyers, Mahindra is the default; rivals need to discount hard or wait for a refresh.
