BYD has unveiled the Dolphin G DM-i, a 4.1 metre plug-in hybrid hatchback engineered specifically for Europe, with a claimed combined range of over 1,000 km. Deliveries begin later in 2026. Pricing is yet to be confirmed but is expected to sit well below the Honda Jazz Hybrid in the UK.

What was announced

BYD has officially revealed the Dolphin G DM-i, a compact plug-in hybrid hatchback developed from the ground up for European markets. Unlike most Chinese brands that adapt domestic products for export, BYD says the Dolphin G was engineered with European tastes, regulations and driving conditions in mind from day one. The car is 4.1 metres long, placing it squarely in premium hatchback territory alongside the Volkswagen Golf and Honda Jazz.

A 1,000 km plug-in hybrid hatch from BYD at Indian pricing would gut Honda's hybrid pitch overnight.

The headline number is range. BYD claims the Dolphin G DM-i delivers a combined range of over 1,000 km, pairing its DM-i plug-in hybrid powertrain with a usable electric-only mode for daily commutes. The pitch is straightforward: EV-like driving without depending on charging infrastructure, which remains uneven across parts of Europe. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in Europe later in 2026.

Pricing has not been confirmed. However, BYD is expected to undercut the Honda Jazz Hybrid by a significant margin. The Jazz Hybrid currently retails in the UK at GBP 28,475, roughly Rs 36.65 lakh. Equally significant for Indian readers, BYD India teased its DM-i hybrid technology on social media just days before the European reveal, the first concrete hint that plug-in hybrids could join BYD's India lineup, which so far has focused on the Atto 3, Seal and eMax 7.

The Car Jury verdict

The Dolphin G DM-i matters to Indian buyers for one reason: BYD India teased DM-i hybrid tech on social media days before this Europe debut. That is not a coincidence. India is the obvious next market for a long-range plug-in hybrid hatch, because our charging network is still patchy and a 1,000 km combined range removes the single biggest objection to electrified motoring. If BYD lands this around the Rs 18-22 lakh band, it puts the Honda City, Amaze and even premium hatches under real pressure.

As Biturbo Media notes, "BYD, Chery, Geely, SAIC and Great Wall are all major brands," and ignoring them is no longer an option. Honda's hybrid strategy in India looks thin against this. If you are shopping a Honda City or Volkswagen Taigun today, wait six months.
