BYD's First India PHEV Lands June 9: Atto 2 Or Sealion 6 Incoming

BYD has confirmed it will debut its first plug-in hybrid for the Indian market on Tuesday, June 9. The Chinese carmaker, which has so far sold only EVs here, teased the model on May 26 and confirmed it will use the brand's DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain.

What was announced

BYD has announced that its first plug-in hybrid for India will debut on June 9. The brand has sold only battery electric vehicles in the country until now, with the Atto 3, Seal and Sealion 7 in its lineup. A teaser released on May 26 confirmed the new model will use BYD's DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV powertrain, which pairs a petrol engine with a battery and electric motor for series-parallel hybrid operation.

BYD is bringing a PHEV to a country that taxes the format harshly, and it still makes sense because 900km of range sells itself.

BYD has not named the specific model, but two candidates are in play globally. The Atto 2 DM-i is dimensionally close to the Hyundai Creta and uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with a choice of two battery packs. The Sealion 6 DM-i is the more premium proposition and is positioned a segment above.

The Car Jury verdict

This is the right product at the right time. India's PHEV tax structure punishes the format, yet BYD is bringing it anyway because the 900km-plus combined range answers the one objection that still stalls EV conversion: long highway drives. If BYD launches the Atto 2 DM-i, it walks straight into the Hyundai Creta fight with a powertrain Hyundai cannot match on paper. The Sealion 6 plays in pricier air.

The catch is the brand question. Biturbo Media has flagged that BYD now sits alongside Chery, Geely, SAIC and Great Wall as a major Chinese player, and Indian buyers in the 20-30 lakh bracket still hesitate on Chinese badges. BYD's EV-only run has built credibility with early adopters; converting mainstream Creta buyers needs aggressive pricing and a real service footprint. Get those two right and this matters.
