E20 Fuel Contamination Is Wrecking Engines: SIAM Demands Chloride Limits

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has told the Centre that E20 petrol samples show dangerously high chloride and moisture levels, and automakers are reporting a sharp rise in fuel injector, fuel pump and exhaust component failures. The Ministry of Petroleum has directed oil marketing companies to tighten fuel quality monitoring at retail outlets.

What was announced

According to industry findings shared with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, automakers have flagged a significant rise in the replacement of fuel injectors, fuel pumps and other components that come into direct contact with petrol. Field investigations point to corrosion and wear caused by excessive chloride contamination as a key contributing factor, alongside elevated moisture content in E20 samples pulled from retail outlets.

Ageing OMC infrastructure is leaching chlorides into E20 petrol, and it is the customer's fuel pump and injectors paying the price.

SIAM has urged the Centre to introduce mandatory chloride limits inside BIS fuel standards, which currently do not cap chloride content in petrol. Ageing fuel storage and distribution infrastructure at oil marketing companies has been identified as a likely source of the contamination, with chlorides entering the fuel chain through corroded tanks, pipelines and water ingress. Ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning E20 absorbs moisture more readily than regular petrol, which accelerates the corrosion cycle once contaminated fuel reaches a vehicle.

Following discussions between automobile manufacturers and OMCs, the Centre has directed oil marketing companies to strengthen fuel quality monitoring at retail outlets. The industry has separately asked for tighter enforcement and testing protocols at depot and dealer level. No recall or compensation framework has been announced yet for owners whose vehicles have already suffered fuel system damage attributed to contaminated E20 petrol.

The Car Jury verdict

This is the bill for pushing E20 out to every pump before the supply chain was ready. Ageing tank infrastructure at OMC depots and retail outlets is leaching chlorides into ethanol-blended petrol, and it is the customer's fuel pump, injectors and catalytic converter paying the price. Owners of pre-E20 cars, which is most cars on Indian roads, were already carrying the efficiency hit; now they are carrying corrosion damage too.

SIAM is right to demand mandatory chloride limits in BIS fuel standards, and the Centre is right to lean on OMCs. Until that happens, our position is blunt: keep fuel bills, keep service records, and push warranty claims hard if an injector or pump fails inside the warranty period. This is a fuel-quality problem, not a driver problem, and manufacturers cannot quietly bill customers for it.
