JSW Eyeing Majority Stake In Volkswagen India: A Lifeline Skoda-VW Actually Needs
Bloomberg reports that Sajjan Jindal's JSW Group is in advanced talks to acquire a stake, potentially a majority holding, in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India. The deal would inject fresh capital into the German group's India arm, which oversees Skoda, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley, and closed FY2026 with just 2.34 percent market share.
What was announced
According to a Bloomberg report cited by Autocar India, JSW Group is in advanced discussions to acquire a stake in Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, with the transaction potentially handing the Sajjan Jindal-led conglomerate a majority holding in Volkswagen AG's India business. Terms are yet to be finalised, and both sides are targeting an agreement in the coming weeks, though the report cautions that a transaction may not ultimately follow.
Volkswagen has built great cars for India but refused to fund the scale. JSW brings the capital and local urgency Wolfsburg never committed.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India is the umbrella entity that oversees the Skoda and Volkswagen mass-market brands in India, alongside luxury and super-luxury marques Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini and Bentley. The unit closed FY2026 with a market share of 2.34 percent, a figure that has stayed largely flat despite the India 2.0 investment cycle that produced the Kushaq, Taigun, Slavia and Virtus. The proposed investment, per Bloomberg, would bring fresh capital into the entity to fund future product and expansion.
A Volkswagen spokesperson declined to confirm the discussions, telling Bloomberg only that the company regularly evaluates opportunities to support its strategy in India's passenger vehicle market. Neither JSW nor Volkswagen has issued a formal statement on the structure, valuation, or scope of the potential transaction. If completed, the deal would mark JSW Group's second major automotive bet after its 35 percent stake in JSW MG Motor India, positioning the conglomerate as a serious multi-brand player in Indian passenger vehicles.
The Car Jury verdict
This is the deal Volkswagen India has needed for a decade. A 2.34 percent share after nearly twenty years, four brands under one roof, and product cycles that lag Hyundai and Kia by years: the India 2.0 project delivered good cars but not scale. JSW brings the one thing Wolfsburg has refused to commit, which is fresh capital and local urgency. The Taigun, Virtus, Kushaq and Slavia remain the best-engineered cars in their segments, and TCJ still rates all four a BUY.
The risk is JSW's split loyalty. It already owns 35 percent of JSW MG Motor India, and as Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane notes, Skoda and Volkswagen "come within 15 to 20 lakh," squarely in MG's territory. Jindal will have to run two portfolios without cannibalising either. If he pulls it off, VW finally gets a real second innings.
