Kia India Bets Big On Electrification And CNG By 2030: Smart Or Scattered?
Kia India has laid out a multi-powertrain plan for the Indian market, confirming factory-fitted CNG models under development, strong hybrids for the Sorento, Seltos and Carnival, and a target of eight electrified models in its lineup by 2030. The brand currently sells four EVs here.
What was announced
Kia India executive Atul Sood, speaking to Autocar Professional, confirmed the company is developing factory-fitted CNG models and localising strong-hybrid technology alongside its EV push. The stated goal: eight electrified models in the India lineup by 2030, out of roughly ten on sale. "We're looking at the complete gamut of technologies available. We want to give all options to our customers, so then we leave it to them to decide what they want to go in for," Sood said.
A strong-hybrid Seltos launched before Hyundai lands a Creta hybrid is the single product that would define Kia's next five years in India.
Kia already sells four EVs in India: the EV6, EV9, Carens Clavis EV and the recently launched Syros EV. On the hybrid front, the company has confirmed a strong-hybrid Seltos is under development, with the Sorento and Carnival also earmarked for hybrid powertrains. Sood said the immediate priority is localising hybrid components to bring costs down, which is the same wall Maruti and Toyota have been chipping away at with the Grand Vitara and Hyryder.
The factory-fitted CNG plan is the more surprising line item. Kia has stayed out of CNG so far, ceding that ground to Maruti, Tata and Hyundai. No specific model, timeline or plant allocation for CNG was confirmed. "Electrified" in Kia's framing includes both battery EVs and strong hybrids, not mild-hybrid 48V systems.
The Car Jury verdict
This is Kia hedging, and hedging is the right call in an Indian market where diesel is fading, EV adoption is still concentrated in metros, and CNG is quietly outselling every other alternative fuel. A strong-hybrid Seltos is the headline product here, because the current Seltos is already a TCJ BUY on petrol and a hybrid variant plugs the one gap Maruti's Grand Vitara and Toyota's Hyryder exploit. Rachit Hirani of MotorOctane has argued the 1.5-litre petrols in this segment are still the best all-rounders, and Gagan Choudhary calls the 1.5 NA petrol "clearly the most in-demand engine" in the class. Fine. But buyers upgrading in 2027-28 will want a hybrid badge on the boot. Kia getting there before Hyundai does with a Creta hybrid is the real prize.
